Join us at Turtle Swamp Brewing in Jamaica Plain for four true, personal stories about how science can send us into free fall — or be there to catch us when we land.

Justin Chen is a scientist turned writer who is interested in creative nonfiction and science communication. His writing has appeared in the New York Times Modern Love Column, Creative Nonfiction, STAT, Essay Daily, Entropy, and elsewhere. He was the 2020 writer-in-residence at Porter Square Books. In his free time, Justin enjoys running, relaxing with Moe Howard (his pet cat), and attempting yoga. His goals for the future are to touch his toes and own a dog.

 

Dr. Michelle Joseph is an orthopedic trauma surgeon specializing in trauma systems and health equity research in Haiti, Ghana, and the US. She holds positions at Harvard Medical School, the Uniformed Services University, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the Fenwick Institute of Pediatric Health Equity and Inclusion), and is the Chief Strategy and Health Equity Officer at the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC). She leads a body of research related to epidemiology, quality improvement, implementation science, and innovation. She helped to develop and implement the PGSSC Antiracism Curriculum and the ARC-S – Antiracism Curriculum for Surgical Residents for the Harvard-affiliated Surgery Programs funded by the American College of Surgeons.

 

Masha Kamenetska is an assistant professor of Physics and Chemistry at Boston University, recipient of the NSF CAREER and DOD Young Investigator awards. Her research lab is dedicated to deploying single molecule techniques to study the atomic-scale structure and properties of biological and man-made molecular devices. She is the proud mother of two young boys. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, hiking and staring at the ceiling.

 

Larissa Zhou is a PhD student at Harvard University, where she develops food technologies for low-resource environments. She loves to rock climb and cook. She's invested in building communities and transforming mentees into leaders, both in academia and on the mountain.
