Mariko Moher is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology department at Williams College, where she teaches classes on developmental psychology and cognitive development. Her research focuses on the development of memory in early childhood. Outside of her office / classroom / lab, she can also be found in the kitchen making pizzas or cakes, or chasing her daughter around town.
Hugh Powell is a senior science editor at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He counts himself as insanely lucky to have been part of three expeditions to Antarctica to write about National Science Foundation research. He often writes about birds and conservation at the Cornell Lab's website All About Birds and elsewhere. As a senior at Williams College, Conor Mook is a Biology and English double major and is focusing his studies on circuits neuroscience and literary theory. He is currently completing research for an honors thesis in biology and neuroscience and is especially interested in the neural circuitry that underlies food intake in animals, the control these circuits may have over cardiac physiology, and in the clinical applications of this type of research. In addition, he has a passion for theatre—especially theatrical design—and served as a member of the design team for the Williams Theatre Department’s productions of Hamlet and Copenhagen. An avid sailor, Conor is a member of the Williams College Sailing Team and spent a semester studying abroad on a 40-meter brigantine schooner in the Pacific. This experience allowed him to combine his loves of science and sailing, as the ship was a fully equipped scientific research vessel. He grew up in Sleepy Hollow and Katonah, New York and now spends most of his time in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Phoebe Cohen is an Assistant Professor in Geosciences at Williams College. Phoebe is a paleontologist who utilizes a wide variety of microscopic and microchemical techniques, combined with data from field-based stratigraphy and sedimentology, to reconstruct ancient organisms and ecosystems. Phoebe was born and raised in Newton, MA. She received her undergraduate degree in Earth Systems Science at Cornell University and then spent two years working at the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, NY where she nurtured her dual passions for paleontology and education. Phoebe received her PhD in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences school at Harvard University in 2010, where her thesis focused on a variety of enigmatic eukaryotic fossil groups from the Neoproterozoic, the time period directly preceding the Cambrian radiation of animal life. After graduate school, Phoebe was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT where she was also the Education and Outreach Lead for MIT’s NASA Astrobiology team. Phoebe began her position at Williams in 2012. In 2012, Phoebe was also awarded the Geological Society of America Subaru Outstanding Woman in Science Award. Her research is funded by the NASA Astrobiology program. She lives in Pownal VT with her husband and the sweetest pit bull you will ever meet.
