A proud Nicaraguan Latina, Jenny Mercado is a dedicated mother and seasoned healthcare professional with over 14 years of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Hasbro Children's Hospital. Beyond the hospital walls, she's the Founder of "Hermandad por Nicaragua," fostering community solidarity. Jenny is a Co-Facilitator of WRWC's Nuevas Voces Program, empowering women, and the Founder of the Olneyville Resilience Hub, a community anchor providing crucial support. Recognized for her leadership, she's a nominee for the 2023 Leadership RI cohort. Recently collaborating with Bates College, she is steering the VECINA project with the Mathematics and Data Justice Collaborative, showcasing her commitment to education and community-driven change. Her journey epitomizes compassion, leadership, and community impact.
Mel Ortiz Alvarez de la Campa is a Puerto Rican & queer scientist, writer and artist. They graduated from the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras with a B.S. in Integrative Biology and a minor in Medical Humanities in 2021. They are currently a third year Pathobiology PhD candidate at Brown University, as well as an NSF GRFP fellow. Their research focuses on finding a link between early life adversity, anxiety and the microbiome. Outside of the lab, Mel is co-founder of Ciencia Pa' Todes, a Spanish-language sci-com initiative based in the Caribbean. In their free time, they are a freelance writer and do artwork commissions for charity.
Manuel Lino is a science journalist, editor, writer and occasional speaker working mainly as an independent reporter for mainly for Eje Central. He was a founding member and first president of the Red Mexicana de Periodistas de Ciencia (RedMPC); editor of the cultural section of El Economista; head of information at the TV program Creadores Universitarios, and has been a teacher of journalism, science journalism, narrative, and an entrepreneur with the online magazine Los INTANGIBLES. On the other hand, as a fictional writer, he won the XXXI edition of the Concurso Latinoamericano de Cuento Edmundo Valadés and the Premio Nacional de Cuento Ciudad de Ecatepec with the book Números para contar. In his youth, he had a brief carrier as a music performer, playing guitar with rock and salsa bands, and as a composer for the bands and for a few theater stages and movies. He’s the proud father of two boys.
