Gerald (Gerry) Downes is an Associate Professor in Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He received a BS in Biology from Johnson C Smith University, a PhD in Neuroscience from Washington University, and postdoctoral training from the University of Pennsylvania. His laboratory studies tiny fish to investigate how genes and brains control movement. He is passionate about science teaching and outreach, as well as shifting perceptions on who can be a scientist.

 

Laura Fattaruso lives in Holyoke, Massachusetts. They got their bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Geology with a minor in Physics at SUNY Albany in New York state, and their master's degree in Geoscience at UMass Amherst where they are now working on a PhD to be completed in summer 2022. Their research focuses on faults and fracture mechanics to improve our understanding of earthquakes, along with side projects in paleomagnetism and geologic mapping of Venus. They have also worked as a teacher, housekeeper, landscaper, sandwich maker, and dog walker. They produced and hosted the podcast ‘Lab Talk with Laura’ which features conversations about research between scientists and comedians. They were a 2019 Mass Media Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, doing science reporting for King 5 News in Seattle, and they currently write about emerging earthquake research for Temblor Earthquake News.

 

Michy Bad Cakes practiced storytelling stand up comedy at Happier Valley Comedy School and has been performing stand-up comedy all throughout Western Massachusetts.

 

Sophia Florence is a comedian, screenwriter, chemical engineer, and data scientist from the Waterbury, CT area, with history in the pharmaceuticals and personal care industries. She has been featured on podcasts on a large variety of topics, from comedy and music to politics. She hosts regular comedy shows in central Connecticut, and works in the pharmaceutical industry during the day. Her academic background includes a B.S. in chemical engineering from University of New Haven, and she is currently working towards a master's degree in mathematics from Central Connecticut State University.
