This collaboration between the Speak Up, Rise Up Festival and The Story Collider seeks to illuminate the intersection between science and activism through the true, personal stories of advocates themselves.

Briana Christophers is an MD-PhD student at the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program at Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Rockefeller University. She spends her time working on projects related to embryology, environmental health justice, and mentoring the next generation of diverse physicians and scientists. She recently co-authored the e-book “The Free Guide to Medical School Admission.” She is a Miami native and graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Molecular Biology. Born in NYC - Raised in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn living with adopted Family. Titus Battle earned an Academic Scholarship to attend the UAB in Birmingham, Alabama and has spent the last 33 years in Birmingham, Ala. being a Friend & Father to his Children and now serves as Grand-Father & Friend to the 2 Grand-Daughters. After 30 years of living without a college degree, Mr. Battle returned to college in 2012 to complete his degree and graduated with honors from and HBCU called Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Child Development Education. He is currently in pursuit of a Masters in Applied Psychology so as to be qualified to begin: The Promise to Children Foundation, Inc. A 24 hour human development organization ~ for and about ~ The healthy development of Children. We will: Feed, Educate, House and Love (Treat with dignity & Respect) all unwanted, abused, forgotten, homeless, hungry, sick and dying children in America and subsequently throughout the world. Victoria Ruiz is an Assistant Professor and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at NYU Langone medical center. She obtained her PhD in Pathobiology from Brown University, and she completed her postdoctoral work at New York University Langone Medical Center. Her primary research focuses on the effects of environmental perturbations of microbial communities on host immunity and physiology. In addition to research, she is passionate about increasing equity and inclusion in STEM and developing new and innovative pedagogical strategies to improve learning outcome for undergraduate students interested in pursuing STEM fields.
