This October, we’re partnering with RockEDU and ASBMB’s SciOut 2018 un-conference to produce this private show featuring stories from attendees! Hosted by Erin Barker and Katie Wu.
Please note: This show is open only to attendees of the SciOut 2018 conference, who can register for free at the link below.
About SciOut18
In October 2018, representatives of science outreach communities from across the nation will gather at The Rockefeller University for SciOut18, an “unconference” to discuss and actively workshop multiple aspects related to the expanding field of science outreach. We are excited to include a wonderful science outreach initiative, Story Collider, as part of our agenda. SciOut18 is hosted by RockEDU Science Outreach, in collaboration with the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), and is sponsored by Science Sandbox, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, Rita Allen Foundation, National Alliance for Broader Impacts (NABI), and The Pinkerton Foundation. This Story Collider event will be sponsored by The Pinkerton Foundation.
Stories by:
Parmvir Bahia is a short, British-Indian, neuroscience PhD working at the University of South Florida. She studies the role of nerves in the respiratory system and how they might hold the key to understanding diseases like asthma and COPD. When not researching or writing long lists of self-describing adjectives she runs the science communication and outreach initiatives: Taste of Science – a science festival for adults, and a podcast called 2Scientists. She also enjoys running on trails and glasses of red wine, but not usually at the same time.
Kristen Coakley Ashare is the Assistant Director of the Science Outreach Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania. She advises on faculty NSF grant submissions and works with graduate students as they navigate the incorporation of outreach activities into their scientific career training and fellowship applications.
She discovered her love of conveying the broader implications of scientific research to the general public and an interest in how science education can be implemented most effectively by participating in educational programs as a guest scientist while in graduate school.
When she is not using Track Changes on other people’s grant proposals, she loves cooking for her wife, crafting with felt, and curating an Instagram feed on behalf her dog and cat: @Mousse_n_Squirrel
Allison Coffin is a neuroscience professor at Washington State University Vancouver, where she researches hearing loss – how do we lose our hearing, and how can we prevent hearing loss or restore hearing after damage? Her favorite moments in the lab are when a student calls excitedly from the microscope with something new and interesting, or when a technician eagerly shows off new data. Alli is also the co-founder and President of Science Talk, a science communication non-profit that facilitates networking, sharing of new ideas, and collaboration within the science communication community. When she’s not working (which must happen sometimes!), she can be seen reading, petting cats, going for walks with her husband, or riding her motorcycle around the Pacific Northwest.
Paula Croxson is a neuroscientist, musician and open water swimmer. She received an M.A. from the University of Cambridge and a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford before moving to New York to run a neuroscience lab. She is now Senior Manager for Education Programs at Columbia University's Zuckerman Institute.
