Dr. Emily Darling is the Director of Coral Reef Conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society where she leads global coral reef conservation and science programs connecting conservation impact across the Western Indian Ocean, Indonesia, Melanesia and the Caribbean. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department on Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto. Emily’s research investigates how tropical coral reefs are changing in the face of our climate crisis and the role of climate refuges and local community management in global conservation. She is a certified scientific diver and has published 60+ publications in leading scientific journals and received international awards for her research and science communication. Inspired by collaboration, Emily is a co-founder of the innovative field-ready technology platform MERMAID for coral reef monitoring and co-developed the first framework to measure conservation impact based on Nobel Prize winner Elinor Ostrom’s influential work. In addition to being a leading coral reef scientist, Emily is also a passionate communicator and has been featured on National Geographic, PBS Nature, CNN International and Forbes International.

 

Celia Du: Pulled by a curiosity and passion for everything from atoms to concertos, Celia Du was a bit of a lost soul when it came to finding her next steps. After landing on chemistry and graduating with thankfully only a few broken flasks, she found herself in world of science communication, discovering it a lovely blend of many of her interests and skills. Now, she currently works as the Royal Canadian Institute for Science's Public Engagement Officer and a Communications Officer at the Canadian Space Agency, and has been interviewed by Discovery UK, Global News, The Canadian Press, CFRA Radio and CTV News. Dedicated to improving science communication practices, she holds an MSc in Science Communication & Public Engagement from the University of Edinburgh.

 

Ana Sofía Barrows, CCIP (she/her) is a Senior Consultant, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Intact Financial Corporation. She holds a Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIP) designation, and has a multidisciplinary educational background in Medical Physics, Social Justice Education, and Leadership and Inclusion. She has led multiple initiatives focused on advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and has spoken about the importance of inclusion in multiple channels such as CBC's On the Money, CBC radio, and multiple conferences and panels.

Ana Sofia is the co-author of the article, So, you want to host an inclusive and accessible conference? published in FACETS Journal, and she has written for publications such as the Canadian Science Policy Centre, and Latinos Magazine.

In addition to this work, Ana Sofia is an instructor at the Rotman School of Management’s executive program Inclusion by Design, where she teaches Human-centred Design Thinking.

 

Dr. Stephanie Loeb is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at McGill University. Prior to joining McGill, she was a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford where she studied the sunlight inactivation of human norovirus. She received her PhD from Yale University with a focus on the environmental applications of light-activated and fluorescent nanomaterials. Prof Loeb's research interests encompass materials science and environmental engineering, with particular expertise in the areas of nanotechnology, photonics, and environmental virology. She really likes to listen to stories, and very occasionally tells a story.
