The Story Collider Presents: Stories from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative

The Story Collider is partnering with the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiatve (GoMRI) in conjunction the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting for this FREE show ! Join us for five true, personal stories about natural disasters and the way we respond. 

Hosted by Ari Daniel and Shane M Hanlon. 

Doors open at 6:30 pm. Show starts at 7:00 pm.

Space is limited and seating is first come, first served. Appetizers and refreshments will be provided.

Paula Buchanan is a doctoral student in Emergency Management.  Her research focuses on the intersection of emergency management, communications, public health, and information systems. She is also passionate about using social media, information technology, and data visualization tools to effectively communicate with targeted audiences.  Paula graduated from Tulane University with a BS in Biology, BA in History, and a minor in Economics.  She also has a MBA and MPH with a concentration in Health Systems Management an is a student member of the Academy of Management, Academy Health, and the International Association of Emergency Managers.

Laura Guertin is a Professor of Earth Science at Penn State Brandywine in Pennsylvania, with a PhD in marine geology and geophysics from the University of Miami/RSMAS. When she's not teaching introductory-level Earth science courses for non-STEM majors or researching the impact of technology on student learning, you can find her exploring the outdoors or visualizing connections between art and science. She is a blogger on geoscience education and educational technology for AGU at GeoEd Trek and active on Twitter (@guertin).

Samantha Joye is a microbiologist, an educator, a deep ocean explorer, and a vocal ocean and environmental advocate. Samantha is a Regents’ Professor and also holds the Athletic Association Professorship in Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia; she is a Professor in the Department of Marine Sciences. After her first submersible dive to the Gulf of Mexico seabed in 1994, she was hooked on deep ocean exploration; she has been studying the microbiology of natural seepage of oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico since then.

Jessica Moerman is a paleoclimatologist, which is just a long-winded way of saying she studies Earth’s past climate history. Originally from East Tennessee, Jessica now resides in Washington, DC, where she has fully embraced the DC-life and serves as a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow focusing on climate and environmental issues. As an evangelical Christian, Jessica is passionate about leading church communities towards positive solutions to safeguard our cities, neighborhoods, and the next generation from the effects of a warming world. You can find her on Twitter @jessica_moerman where she tweets all things science, faith, and climate.

Simeon Pesch is a process engineer at Hamburg University of Technology in Germany. As a part of an interdisciplinary research group, he works on the investigation of physical processes during deep-sea oil spills. For his PhD he focuses on experiments in large-scale facilities and under high pressure. When not in the lab he spends much time outdoors or at the university’s brewery plant.
