Albert Arevalo is a native Texan and lover of BBQ. He is a proud alumnus of Texas State University-San Marcos—Eat ‘Em Up, Cats! Albert is passionate about making services accessible to everyone, particularly minorities and low-income communities. He has been fortunate to work alongside colleagues and organizations that align with his moral compass. From connecting youth to their local parks to leading a Regional Litter Campaign in DC, Albert is dedicated to improving the quality of life of the individuals he works with. Shane M Hanlon is a scientist turned communicator who masquerades as a storyteller. He got a PhD studying frogs and turtles, tried his hand in government, and is now a scientist who teaches scientists how to talk to non-scientists. Shane is also DC's oldest (but not bestest) Story Collider co-host & producer. He happily lives in Virginia (but still loves DC), tries to get outside with his partner and dog as much as possible, and is medicore at writing witty biographies. Find him @ecologyofshane.
Jessica Kuperavage is a science communicator and recovering academic. Her PhD research, which focused on health campaigns to improve maternal and infant health outcomes, won the top dissertation award from the National Communication Association in 2015. Since leaving academe, she has worked for clients at the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and in industry. She is currently a scientific writer for EAG Laboratories. She spends her spare time doing pro bono grant writing and publicity work for nonprofits.
Adria Schwarber is an interdisciplinary climate scientist, aspiring science policy advisor, and (self-described) hilarious person. She is currently finishing her Ph.D. at the University of Maryland (UMD) investigating short-term climate responses. When she isn’t working on her dissertation, she’s serving in a variety of volunteer roles, including on the UMD Graduate Student Government Executive Board and as a local science fair judge. She loves talking about her passions, especially her native state of Kentucky. In her free time you can find her hiking or trying a new outdoorsy activities.
Sushma Subramanian is an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Mary Washington, where she advises the staff of the campus newspaper, The Blue & Gray Press. She is also a freelance magazine writer focusing on the intersection of science and culture. Her most recent stories are about the neuroscience behind her struggles to relearn her forgotten first language and the ongoing legal battle surrounding the unethical Guatemala syphilis experiments. Her work has appeared in Discover, Slate, Foreign Policy and many other publications. Her book on the sense of touch is forthcoming from the publisher Algonquin.
